The Role of Compression Garments in Body Contouring Recovery and Results
After any kind of body contouring procedure, such as vaser liposuction or tummy tuck, your surgeon will give you a compression garment. This is a vital part of your recovery and almost as important as the surgery itself in ensuring successful, long-term results.
In this blog, Dr Rhys van der Rijt, a cosmetic surgeon in Sydney, will share his expert advice about the role of compression garments and why wearing a compression garment after a tummy tuck or similar procedure is so important.
The Purpose Of Compression Garments
We get asked many questions about wearing compression garments after lipo, tummy tucks and other cosmetic procedures. We understand that wearing a compression garment after a tummy tuck can sometimes be annoying or uncomfortable. Still, as mentioned above, compression garments are an essential part of the post-op care and recovery process.
Compression garments help accelerate the healing process following a body contouring procedure and reduce pain, swelling and bruising. Compression after lipo also helps
reduce excess skin, while compression after abdominoplasty helps achieve better contour to your abdomen.
How Long To Wear A Compression Garment After Tummy Tuck And Lipo
We advise nearly all our tummy tuck, lipo and post-bariatric body contouring patients to wear their compression garments for 6-8 weeks. The exact time will depend on your surgery and the rate of your recovery.
Compression garments should be worn as much as possible during both the day and night. However, it’s appropriate to remove them when bathing. If you have any concerns about wearing compression after lipo or other procedures, it’s best to contact your surgeon right away.
What Happens If I Don’t Wear My Compression Garment After A Tummy Tuck?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure where excess fat is permanently suctioned out from targeted body areas, completely reshaping that area. When the removal of the fat occurs, you will have excess skin left behind around these areas. Compression after lipo can reduce this by adhering to underlying tissue and help reduce swelling and bruising associated with the procedure.
Failing to wear your compression garments after a tummy tuck or lipo will result in the excess skin becoming loose, meaning you will not achieve the aesthetic you may be hoping for, and revision surgery may be required.
Ensuring Full Recovery & Great Result After Cosmetic Procedures
While wearing a compression garment might seem like a small detail in your recovery, not doing this step can have big consequences. Not wearing a compression garment after a tummy tuck or similar procedures can lead to a range of problems that can negatively affect your healing and the final results of your surgery.
