Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) in Sydney

Considering a abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) in Sydney? Dr. Rhys van der Rijt, a specialist plastic surgeon, offers advanced abdominoplasty surgery and post pregnancy surgery to help improve abdominal contour..

What is an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) ?

Commonly known as a “tummy tuck”, Abdominoplasty surgery can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding or flabby abdomen. This is a surgical procedure which removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall.

What are the aims of an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

The aims of abdominoplasty surgery are to improve the contour and appearance of the abdomen. This is achieved by removing the excess and sagging skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. This is in combination with repairing your abdominal muscles that have stretched and split as a result of childbirth, aging or weight loss.

It is important to note that an abdominal procedure is not a method for fat loss. Other limitations to this procedure include large amounts of central abdominal fat, the presence of stretch marks, which can be more obvious during this procedure and any previous abdominal surgery that you may have had, which can compromise blood flow to the abdomen. Dr van der Rijt will discuss any of these limitations if they apply to your case during the consultation

  • Abdominoplasty surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes approximately 2-3 hours.  You will stay in hospital for 1-2 nights. Sometimes a drain may be used for your procedure but usually no drain is used. You will be provided with an abdominal binder to help your recovery.  All dressings used will be waterproof, and you will be able to shower normally after the operation.

Post-surgery, you should refrain from heavy lifting for 6 weeks.  You can drive when moving freely and not taking any opiate medications, this is usually at 1-2 weeks after your procedure.  You will also be required to wear your post-operative abdominal binder for 6 weeks.

  • No, depending on your issues and your goals, there are variations to the abdominoplasty procedure. Types of abdominoplasty procedures include,

    1. Total abdominoplasty (the most common operation, scar hip to hip), addressing upper and lower abdominal areas, translocation of belly button, muscle repair and liposuction if needed.

    2. Lower abdominoplasty or mini-tuck (smaller scar): Suitable for smaller slight patients to address the lower part of the abdomen only. The recovery is quicker however please note that the upper abdomen will not be improved.

    3. Extended abdominoplasty (scar 180 degrees includes love handles)

    4. The Fleur De Lis Abdominoplasty is used exclusively for massive weight loss patients where the horizontal incision will not be sufficient. An additional vertical incision (Inverted T-Scar) is made which runs down the midsection to correct the upper abdominal tissue and excess skin.

    5. The body lift abdominoplasty is for major weight loss patients who require skin to be addressed on their abdomen and back. The scar is 360 degrees.

  • This operation is most suited to people who only require the removal of fat and excess loose skin from the area below the navel (belly button). This also means that there will be a smaller scar, which some patients prefer.

Depending on how much loose skin and fat deposits that need to be removed to make the surgery worthwhile will determine if you can have a mini-tummy tuck or if you should proceed with the complete abdominoplasty.
